ECPP Supports Valores in Pursuit of Justice for DANA Tragedy Victims

The European Christian Political Party (ECPP) expresses its strong support for its Spanish member party, Valores, in their pursuit of justice and accountability in the prosecution of the case related to the October 29 DANA tragedy. This severe weather disaster led to the deaths of 228 people in the Valencian Community, 7 in Castilla-La Mancha, and one in Andalusia. The scale of the catastrophe and the lack of accountability and justice demand urgent attention. Valores will act as a private prosecutor, investigating possible criminal liability arising from the tragedy. ECPP stands firmly with those demanding answers, integrity, and responsibility from governments when citizens’ lives are at stake, recognizing this effort as part of a broader commitment to protect human dignity and uphold the common good in Europe.

The October 29 DANA

On October 29, 2024, the Valencian Community in Spain experienced a catastrophic weather event known as a DANA (Depresión Aislada en Niveles Altos), resulting in torrential rains that caused severe flooding and led to the deaths of 236 people. The disaster overwhelmed infrastructure, destroyed homes and vehicles, and sparked serious scrutiny over emergency response measures and political decisions.

Actions of Valores

Valores president Alfonso Galdón emphasized that “justice must be done for those whose lives were taken,” arguing that the tragedy could have been avoided if essential infrastructure had been in place and if the central government had assumed command immediately, as required, given the red alerts issued by AEMET that morning and the cross-regional nature of the emergency. Valores firmly believes the disaster reveals massive institutional negligence and lethal administrative dis-coordination.

A law firm will handle the legal action, aiming to uncover the chain of omissions, decisions, and failures that led to one of Spain’s deadliest disasters in decades. Valores has made it clear: this is not a symbolic gesture but a determined effort to hold those in power accountable for failing to meet their legal and ethical responsibilities.
