On the first evening of the European Parliament’s plenary session, ECPP MEP Cristian Terheş delivered a strong call to European and American leaders to remember the shared values that underpin the transatlantic partnership. He recalled the historic speech delivered by US President Ronald Reagan in the European Parliament on 8 May 1985.

In his speech, MEP Terheş addressed the current geopolitical tensions between the United States and Europe by reiterating President Reagan’s message that the partnership between Europe and the United States was built not merely on treaties or political convenience, but on shared Judeo-Christian values, a common culture and history, and a deep commitment to life, liberty, prosperity, and the pursuit of happiness.

MEP Terheş emphasized that Reagan’s words remain profoundly relevant today. He underlined that the relationship between Europe and the United States is not only strategic, but also moral, rooted in shared beliefs that place human dignity, freedom, and democratic accountability at the centre of public life.

In times of geopolitical tension and uncertainty, he argued, Europe should learn not only from past mistakes but also from proven successes. He highlighted NATO and the transatlantic strategic partnership as clear examples of cooperation that have delivered peace, security, and stability for decades. “When the US and Europe work together, our economies flourish, our societies become more secure, and freedom prevails,” Terheş stated.

Concluding his intervention, MEP Terheş called on European and American leaders to rediscover and renew the spirit of President Reagan’s message, reaffirming the moral and values-based foundation of the transatlantic partnership in today’s changing world.
