40 Years Since Chornobyl

Valeriu Ghiletchi, ECPP President:

“The Chornobyl disaster was a horrifying tragedy whose effects were felt throughout Europe. I have first-hand experience of those tragic days in Moldova. For several days, the information was kept secret by the Soviet authorities. When the tragic news was finally announced, it came a as shock. Everyone was frightened. Many Moldovans and Ukrainians were deployed to Chornobyl to help extinguish the fire and build the sarcophagus. Most of them were severely affected by elevated radiation levels. ECPP remembers the victims and prays for the families who lost loved ones in its aftermath. Governments must ensure the safety and security of their nuclear power facilities. We call upon the Russian authorities to stop attacking Ukrainian nuclear facilities and to ensure the safety of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, which they are now occupying illegally.”
